Adapting to the first months of college: A guide for new students

College is a big step up from school but it’s also an exciting time to explore new subjects or go deeper into the ones you already enjoy. It’s also the place to arm yourself with all the skills, discipline and attitude you need to prepare for your future.

Here are a few things to think about when you are settling in to help you make the most of your college experience.

Embrace the new

Everyone can feel a bit out of place when they first start college. It’s totally normal to miss your old friends from school, and maybe even some of your old teachers, but try to focus on the positives of this next stage of your life. There’s a whole load of new friends to make and by taking advantage of our enrichment programme you can get involved with a whole range of clubs and activities where you’ll meet new people. The more you get involved, the quicker you’ll feel at home.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help

If you are finding it difficult to adapt, don’t suffer in silence and reach out for support. Your Personal Tutor is there to guide you through these early days and help you make sense of everything. If the issues run deeper he or she can put you in touch with Student Support service. The friendly staff there are there to listen and help with everything from academic issues to personal problems. You can also talk to your friends, family, or even your teachers. Remember, you’re not alone in this.

The differences from school

College is quite different from school. You’ll have more freedom, responsibility and independence and you’ll need to manage your time effectively. Lessons might be larger and less interactive, and you’ll probably have to do a lot more study on your own. Don’t be afraid to ask your teachers for help if you’re struggling with your coursework.

The golden rules

  • Attending classes regularly keeps you ahead of the game and in the loop. It’s also good preparation for the world of work.
  • Being prepared for each session – by bringing the right resources with you for each session – helps you focus and make the most of every lesson.
  • Asking questions if you don’t understand anything will also make the most of your time in class and help your tutor help you.
  • Accepting that you are responsible for achieving your success is important. If you feel something is wrong, then ask the question.
  • Being engaged with your class and you tutor can bring your sessions alive. Be enthusiastic and unafraid to take part in the debate.

Make the most of your time here

It’s in your hands to make the most of your time here and remember, success is all about understanding that you control your own destiny. Settling into college takes time. Be patient with yourself, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. With a little effort, you’ll soon be feeling right at home.
