St Vincent College Students Pass on Lifesaving Skills to Girl Guides

Girl Guides have been given essential First Aid skills that could save a life, thanks to three St Vincent College students.

Leo Bowman, Phillippa Ockendon and William King, who are studying Level 3 sports coaching and development at the Gosport college, spent an evening with the 1st Hedge End guides at their Baden Powell Lodge to pass on what they have learnt about First Aid on their course. Their skills and experience will help the youngsters gain their First Aid Skills badge, which is an important step on the way to their Guide Gold Award, Guiding’s highest award.

The leadership students taught CPR, how to control bleeding, creating slings and the use of PPE.  They also taught the guides what to check for when first finding someone injured and how to put them in the recovery.

“The guides were very well behaved and enthusiastic and the students were very patient and clear in their instructions,” said course teacher Philip Love.

“The leaders worked hard for the two  weeks before the event to learn the content and their lesson plan format.  They also did mock lesson rehearsals so they could ensure the timings and flow was honed for the session.

“The most impressive thing is that during the session they were receiving continual feedback and coaching, that they managed to adapt instantly and incorporated into their session. Within the first two minutes they knew all their clients’ names and were very friendly, professional and led with confidence.  It was a credit to the work they put in.”

Guide leader Jane Corfe said: “The Guides had a fantastic evening learning first aid from the team from St Vincent.  It’s a serious topic that can make a real difference to someone in the future.

“They made it engaging, fun and appropriate for this age group. meaning the Guides are much more likely to remember these skills and able to use them should the need ever arise.”
